PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Located in downtown Merriam, KS is a year-round hub for recreational activities, classes, and events. Among the many amenities Powell Community Center has to offer, the center also offers year-round fun in the water with both its indoor and outdoor pools. Swim a lap or two in their spacious pool or relax in the lazy river or hot tub. The possibilities are endless at Powell Community Center.

As one would figure with owning an indoor aquatic center, high humidity, and moisture can sometimes be a problem. For Powell Community Center, the high humidity atmosphere was failing the existing coating on the roofing, decking, and support choice. The initial issue that occurred was that the structural integrity of the building was being affected by moisture. The ceiling steel was failing and paint was falling into the pool.

Going on a four-year relationship with the City of Mission, they knew to call in the professionals. Blast It Clean helped find a solution to help keep the overall structure of the ceiling clean. The solution was an investment in preventive maintenance. We were trusted to paint the walls and ceiling of the pool area and complete the job efficiently and in a timely manner.

THE RUST REMOVAL & COATING PROCESS

scaffolding fully setup at indoor pool site with slide

Scaffolding setup was the first step in the process. As luck would have it, the 1k sq ft of scaffolding we had initially planned on wasn’t going to be enough and we had to put in another 3k sq ft of decking. Extra team members were added to accommodate the timeline for the project. After the scaffolding was set up, two processes of dry ice blasting and surface preparation were applied. The end goal was to prime and paint the entire facility from top to bottom with coatings specific to preventing moisture retention. To do this, three levels of the coating were applied using three different systems.

  • A ceiling system was applied to prevent moisture.
  • A wall coating system was applied to clean and protect the walls from moisture.
  • A deck coating was applied so that water would not be absorbed into the cement.

All systems were applied using waterproof membranes but designed differently based on the type of material it was being adhered to (steel, concrete, etc).

The waterproof membrane application process can be applied in a variety of methods and materials as shown above, but its purpose is to prevent moisture from damaging a surface. Blast It Clean has the ability to apply tough waterproof membranes that have the elasticity to move with your surface, preventing future opportunities for water penetration

After the initial work was completed, there were a few touch-ups that needed to be completed with some overspray on the door handles, paint bleeding into the grouting of the tiles, and paint not lining up perfectly against the walls and floors. The Blast It Clean crew went in during the weekends on shutdown times to administer those fixes including all new caulking and grouting for any over-bled areas.

Blast It Clean delivered outstanding quality. We were able to work with the community center and managed to come in and fix the issues during their shutdown period. Major wins included meeting the timeline and an ongoing strong relationship with our client. We were also invited back to do more work in the future for the City of Mission. The Powell Community Center pool renovation and coating was completed and it can now return to being a hub for those looking to enjoy all the recreational activities it offers.
