Fostering Creativity and Connections – Meet Sarah
Employee Spotlight is a new series intended to share a glimpse into our team. Our hope is that you can get to know us a little better.
SARAH’S ROLE AT BLAST IT CLEAN
Sarah is Blast It Clean’s Marketing Specialist and has been with us for about 9 months. She helps with our social media, website, account management, and other digital marketing needs. On top of those responsibilities, she is a vital part of our company culture.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?
Probably the creativity aspect, I like doing content creation for our social media. I also like that it’s an industry that I thought I’d never be in and I’ve learned way more about sandblasting and painting than I ever thought I would. I’ve met a lot of cool people, and it’s interesting working in a predominantly male workforce.
WHAT’S THE BEST BOOK OR PODCAST YOU’VE RECENTLY READ/LISTENED TO?
I just finished reading Red Rising by Pierce Brown, it’s a dystopian sci-fi book. And I currently just started reading The God in the Woods, which is a mystery/thriller novel, and it’s really captivating so far.
HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED ON TOUGH DAYS?
I try to do lots of self-care and be nice to myself, that way I can be nice to others. First and foremost, that’s making sure I get coffee, sometimes that’s buying an extra special latte to start my day off on a good note. Exercising is important, to make sure I have a clear head. Walking my dog, just staying busy honestly. Watering my plants, listening to a true crime podcast, calling up a friend or family member that maybe I haven’t talked to in a while. Stuff of that nature.
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN ANY TIME PERIOD, PAST OR FUTURE, WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Probably the past, I feel like I was supposed to live out my teen years in the 80’s because they had the best music and the fashion and hairstyles were pretty great. Then live out my 20s in the 90’s, because all the clubs in the 90’s played techno music and I would give anything to be able to go back and dance to 90’s techno music.
They don’t even realize how good they had it back then. For my school dances, we had to dance to Taylor Swift, Pitbull, or Kesha, that’s so lame compared to Journey or Queen. Can you imagine dancing to Billy Idol or Foreigner at your senior prom? That decade really had the best love ballads to slow dance to.
IF YOU COULD ADD ONE NEW TRADITION TO THE WORKPLACE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I feel like a Friendsgiving would be fun, we could all bring in side dishes and have a potluck with all of the guys. Or we could do a white elephant or secret Santa gift exchange.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE KEY TO A HAPPY LIFE?
Work-life balance. I believe that you need to have a good ratio of working to enjoying life for what it is outside of work. Taking time to enjoy the smaller things. Whether that’s going out to eat with a friend, spending time at a plant nursery and looking at plants, or curling up with a good book while it’s raining outside.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO YOUR CURRENT FIELD OF WORK AT BIC?
Funnily enough, my cousin works for BIC who is in the marketing department here. She was hinting that she would like to have someone help her with marketing and take over the social media management. So I talked to Rick our boss, and he developed a role for me here at BIC.
WHAT’S THE MOST ADVENTUROUS THING YOU’VE EVER DONE?
Cliff jumping in Arkansas was pretty adventurous. Although I really messed up my back because of it, because I jumped wearing a life vest which you aren’t supposed to do. It only allowed me to go a foot or two underwater versus several, so the pressure was super intense on my spinal cord. I also travel a lot, which could be considered adventurous. Visiting different countries, trying new foods, and experiencing new cultures. France and Japan especially, since they do not speak English, the language barrier was definitely a bit of a culture shock.
WHAT’S ONE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED THIS YEAR?
To not give up on things easily and see things through. Also to not take the smaller things for granted.
DO YOU PREFER A COZY NIGHT IN OR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN?
I like both ways, I really could do either. I like to get dressed up and do my makeup. Then go out and hang with the girls and mingle with new people. But at the same time, I could have just as much fun cozying up under a blanket with my dog while sipping on some hot tea. I would be just as content.
IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Just a couple of weeks ago, I was visiting my grandpa with my family to celebrate his 90th birthday. We had asked him what words of wisdom he had for the younger generations. He cracked a smile and said, “Hang in there!” Honestly what a great answer. It really resonated with me, so that’s what I would have to say. Hang in there!
